Synopsis: Late at night in a Malaysian camp, a group of female trainees on duty are urgently summoned. One trainee, allegedly possessed by a ghost, accuses them of breaking the rules by leaving “dirty things” in the toilet. The instructor sternly orders them to clean it up by midnight. These girls, from different faiths, are placed in the same living space, and the boundaries of mutual respect start to blur, with their strained harmony on the verge of collapse. They are pressured to undertake a gruesome midnight cleanup.
About the Filmmaker: Born in Malaysia, Mickey Lai is an emerging filmmaker who graduated with Master of Film and TV Production at Met Film School, London, UK. She is interested in telling stories about diverse cultural values, mortality and self-identity.
Her directorial short debut, The Cloud Is Still There (2020), was selected at Busan, Clermont-Ferrand, Shanghai. Her documentary short, A Worm, Whatever Will Be, Will Be (2022), was also selected in Taipei Golden Horse, SGIFF, Toronto Reel Asian, Jogja-NETPAC and won “The Jury Award” at SeaShorts Film Festival.
Her latest short film, WAShhh (2024), has participated in the Objectifs Short Film Incubator 2021 and premieres at the 77th Locarno Film Festival’s Pardi di Domani, International Competition section.
