For many years, world-renowned artists Gilbert and George have taken day trips to the Essex coast. This film – the last in a trilogy of films documenting their journeys – follows the artists as they embark once again on a day trip from their studio in the East End of London to Southend-on-Sea, in Essex, asking bold and significant questions along the way.
About the Director
Iain B. MacDonald is a British-Irish television director and producer known for a versatile career spanning drama, comedy and documentary.
Born in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, he began his career making arts documentaries, notably GILBERT & GEORGE DAY TRIPPING, about the world-renowned artists. In 2004 he won the Best Short Film Award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival for BILLY’S DAY OUT.
After cutting his teeth in British drama series such as BODIES, THE LAST ENEMY and Jane Austen’s MANSFIELD PARK, he moved to America after receiving an Emmy nomination for his work on EPISODES.
Since then he has directed multiple episodes of American television, shot the pilot for WAYNE, and produced and directed SHAMELESS, PREACHER, POKER FACE and DAREDEVIL BORN AGAIN for Marvel.
MacDonald is also a co-creator of the Essex International Film Festival, reflecting his ongoing engagement with the broader film community
